Math Activities

  • MATh.en.JEANS. Researchers from the IRIMAS Mathematics Department visit several middle and high schools in Alsace, where they propose mathematical research topics for students in the MATh.en.JEANS workshops—true budding researchers. The students present their year’s work at a major conference bringing together schools from the Grand Est region, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The 2023 conference was held in Mulhouse, on the Illberg campus, from May 25 to 27, 2023. MATh.en.JEANS is also the association behind the method. https://www.mathenjeans.fr/
  • Math C2+ Workshops. The Math C2+ workshops consist of a one-week program in mathematics and computer science. We organize them annually in May or June at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Mulhouse. The program includes workshops and lectures, as well as an introduction to the research process in mathematics. These courses are nationally accredited by Animath https://www.mathc2plus.fr/. • Girls, Math, and Computer Science Days. During these events, participants are introduced to careers in science and encouraged to pursue scientific studies. The most recent event took place on September 8, 2023, and brought together 120 high school girls from schools in the Haut-Rhin department. The “Girls, Math, and Computer Science” project is funded by the Noria framework project “New Approach to Post-High School Career Guidance in Alsace” https://www.projet-noria.fr/. A video is also available at this link.

  • Math Games Night. This event is aimed at elementary and secondary school math teachers. It is designed as a professional conference and is held alternately in Mulhouse and Strasbourg by the INSPE and the Mathematics Inspectorate. The next edition is scheduled to take place at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Mulhouse on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
  • Science Festival. Since 2023, the Department of Mathematics has also had a booth at the Science Festival. Come meet the researchers at their booth! This project is part of the Science Festival. This national event is initiated and supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and in Alsace by the Grand Est Region, the European Community of Alsace, the Strasbourg Academy Rectorate, the City of Mulhouse, the M2A, the City of Strasbourg, and Alsatian universities and research organizations.
  • On-demand presentations and support. Researchers in the Department of Mathematics are key participants in the “labomaths.” These are forums for exchange in middle and high schools aimed at fostering reflection, sharing best practices, and collective action across various school districts in Alsace. As such, as with other initiatives, it is entirely possible to contact them for presentations at schools (lectures, workshops, requests for support). Here are some titles of recent presentations.
