Non-smooth dynamical systems have become an important area of research in pure and applied mathematics. The presence of non-smoothness often leads to interesting dynamical behaviors, some of which have smooth equivalents, such as fold and Hopf bifurcations, while others are specific to non-smooth phenomena, such as sliding and fragmentation. These systems are used to model physical problems such as collisions, mechanical friction, impacts, and electrical circuits. They are also relevant in control theory, economics, and climatology.
In recent years, there has been intense scientific activity focused on developing a qualitative theory of non-smooth dynamical systems, in the spirit of Poincaré’s work. This project aims to bring together researchers working on the theory of singular perturbations and partially smooth dynamical systems, in full synergy with the ongoing Fapesp thematic project Ergodic and Qualitative Theories of Dynamical Systems (process 2019/10269-3), coordinated by Claudio Buzzi.
